A professional photography education

This program prepares you for a professional photography career in the dynamic communications industries. In your photography classes, you’ll create conceptually, visually and technically compelling photographs and films, and explore photography’s expressive potential in existing and emerging fields. Contemporary technologies

Our digital photography technology is the best in Canada and among the best in North America. Our state-of-the-art photography equipment and facilities include the latest industry-standard cameras (professional DSLR, medium- and large-format digital cameras), advanced studio/location lighting, colour-managed computer labs and software like Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom, Premiere Pro and Capture One.

Sheridan's Honours Bachelor of Photography program provides extensive opportunities to creatively immerse yourself in the fields of photographic communications and creative visual problem solving. Through hands-on project work using state-of-the-art photography equipment, you'll learn to frame problems and issues; research, collect and evaluate ideas; synthesize and express concepts; and communicate effectively with diverse audiences.

Throughout the program, you'll study in the following areas:

  • Product advertising in studio and on location.
  • Portraiture, fashion and food photography.
  • Editorial and documentary photography.
  • Architectural and industrial photography.
  • Filmmaking for photographers.
  • The business of photography, social media and marketing your services.

Business skills

Photography is not just a creative profession — it's also a business. Sheridan's instructors are successful professional photographers who can provide career mentoring and teach you essential business skills such as these:

  • Negotiating contracts and releases.
  • Pricing and quoting services.
  • Image licensing and managing copyright.
  • Branding and marketing your services.
  • Preparing a professional portfolio in print and online.

Equipment and supplies

You'll receive a DSLR camera kit for your exclusive use from September to the end of April for each of the first two years, and in years 3 and 4 you'll be able to choose from a wide array of high-end video, DSLR, medium- and large-format cameras to produce your projects. You'll also receive a variety of accessories as required by the curriculum. You're not required to own your own laptop. You should plan to spend $1,500–$2,000 per year in supplies (e.g. printing and mounting costs; props for studio and location shoots).

Program length

This four-year photography degree program includes eight academic semesters and one 14-week internship at the end of Year 3. The program will provide the degree-level credential typical of photography internationally.


Sheridan Honours Bachelor of Photography courses are held at the Trafalgar Road Campus in Oakville, Ontario.
